The Nationwide race starts in about 20 minutes and I’m looking skeptically forward to seeing the new Mustangs and Challengers.  I don’t know why anyone would think a new car would give second string teams a better chance at a win but that never stops me; on one of my test teams I picked Brian Ickler.

Yes, I do drink.  Why do you ask.

Cup qualifying was rained out so the Harvick and Johnson picks look pretty good now. Then again it’s a restrictor plate race and absolutely no one is ever safe.  Ever. Between boys being boys, boneheaded moves and intervention by both Lady Luck and her significant other, the Fickle Finger of Fate, it really doesn’t matter.  Our Cup picks are a complete tossup because nothing is normal at Daytona and Talladege.

Grand-Am qualifying is over and the No. 10 SunTrust Ford is on pole, the No. 99 Gainsco starts second and the No. 01 Ganassi BMW starts fifth carrying a 75 lb. weight penalty.  For great detailed info about that scandalous slice of what’s new, check out Marshall Pruett’s article at http://auto-racing.speedtv.com/article/pruett-grand-am-ganassi-bmw-the-wrong-kind-of-fireworks/

Wish I would have read that before I picked Pruett and Rojas.

I like the Michael Shank Dallara, the chassis that was foist upon them after they burnt up their primary Riley/Ford.  Shoulda picked it.

IndyCar is racing at Watkins Glen with Ryan Briscoe fastest in the first practice, followed by Helio and Scott Dixon.  Will Power, the probable race winner, was sixth and today’s runs were more shakedowns than contests.  It’ll be interesting to see how Adam Carroll does in his first IndyCar race.  Driving for Andretti Autosports is a plus but a fifth car is a minus.

This race starts the summer road race period of the schedule which means the best podium chances drivers like Tags, Justin Wilson, Hunter-Reay and maybe even Takuma Sato.  Still, you can never go wrong with the superteam shoes.

And you won’t this weekend, either.
