It's official. Chevy will be racing in the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2012 with a spec Dallara 'safety cell' powered by a new twin turbo V6 and GM -developed (or funded) aero/bodywork package. Can Ford and Dodge be far behind? Can they afford not to be?

There’s been scant news about the Delta Wing entry for the ICONIC IndyCar sweepstakes ever since it was announced that Dallara got the bid. To progressive open wheel fans that was very bad news but all is not lost; the greener, more efficient, more versatile and definitely different formula car concept is anything but stillborn.

By this point in the season there are few surprises in the starter stats; all the usual suspects are at the top of each report and all that's left is for the race results to gauge our respective picking skills. But oh, those intangibles. A flat tire here, a spin or crash there, maybe even a takeout by some driver who fully embraces the 'have at it boys' concept. And yes, I'm talking about Robby Gordon.

The news that GMP has provided three classic quarter-mile collectibles from back in the day (the Tin Indian Knafel Pontiac Judge, Bob Ford 427 Thunderbolt and the Magic Muffler Fiat fuel altered) as September Super 7 Sweep weekly prizes has sparked a thought or three about drag racing, the NHRA and the sport's health (cough) and future. This is worth exactly what you are paying.

Love ya Scott Speed but you belong in IndyCars. Love ya Richard Petty but you belong in church, lighting candles and praying for a miracle. And love ya NHRA drag racing but you need to do something about safety at what's supposed to be the slow end of the race track.

Robin Miller says the Delta Wing may still have a heartbeat for 2012, and if the radical new chassis and open source building concept becomes the norm it will be the first significant new race car design in fifty years. Here's my take on the 11 most significant IndyCars from the last great era of change. And yes, it was supposed to be ja top 10 list but I took liberties with how ties are included.
